If you are either a Legal Permanent Resident [Green Card holder] or United States citizen you are eligible to sponsor your family members to join you here in the the United States.
Your application will be influenced by two factors:
- The way in which you are related to your family member [parent, spouse (including same-sex married spouses), child, son/daughter, brother/sister], and...
- Whether you are a Green Card holder or a U.S. citizen.
Some family members may be able to join you immediately; however other family members may be subject to the “priority date system.” If your family member is subject to the priority date system they may be forced to wait many years before receiving an approved immigrant visa to join you in the United States. Therefore it is very important to act as soon as possible in cases where your family member is subject to the priority date system, to ensure your family member’s place in the visa line.
